Back pain can be caused by a lot of things, not all of which are preventable. Similarly, treating back pain isn’t one size fits all, and requires a lot of trial and error. There are, however, some simple tricks that you can try to aid your quest for back pain relief.
1. Endorphins make you happy
Endorphins are hormones that are released during certain physical activities. Endorphins act as nature’s pain pill by blocking pain signals from the brain. They also relieve anxiety, stress, and depression, all of which are associated with back pain. Exercise, massage, and meditation are all known for releasing endorphins in the body.
Your ab muscles support your lower spine, so it’s important to practice core strengthening exercises, along with aerobics.
2. Sleep well
It’s difficult to get a good night’s rest when you’re in pain. Two-thirds of people with back pain suffer from some type of sleeping disorder. Unfortunately, not getting enough restorative sleep can exacerbate back pain. Try sleeping on your side, with a pillow in between your legs. This will keep your spine in a neutral position, and hopefully help you get the rest you so desperately need.
3. Hot/ cold therapy
It may seem elementary, but it works! Ice packs, heating pads, and even hot baths can relieve a lot of back discomfort. Cold therapy works by reducing inflammation and acting as a local anesthetic. Hot therapy stimulates blood flow, bringing healing nutrients to the affected area, and stops pain messages from being sent to the brain.
4. Stretch
Tight hamstrings can cause back pain. When your hamstrings are too tight, it can stress your lower back and sacroiliac joints. Stretch your hamstrings at least twice a day.
