Shocking back pain stats

If you are experiencing lower back pain, unfortunately, it’s a widespread condition. Actually, the statistics are kind of incredible, as highlighted by EHS Today:

More and more individuals want natural solutions to prevent chronic pain, reduce symptoms, and promote recovery without turning toward painkillers. Here are some natural methods that research deems effective.

Stress relief

Although it may sound implausible, remaining calm is critical to avoiding physical pain. When our stress is elevated, our body goes into “fight or flight” mode, resulting in tight and inflexible muscles. European researchers found that pessimistic, worried people are at a greater risk of back pain.

Comfrey root

Comfrey root ointment can be powerful, cutting your pain down to 5% of its original level, notes a British study cited by Health.com editor Christine Mattheis. “Look for comfrey root ointment in health food stores or online,” she says. “Just don’t use it for more than 10 days at a time—it can be toxic.”

Therapeutic massage

If you get a massage each week for 10 weeks, you can reduce your chronic lower back pain significantly, as indicated by an Annals of Internal Medicine report.

Tai chi

This internal Chinese martial art, described by the Mayo Clinic as “a gentle way to fight stress,” is also effective against back pain. Researchers found that tai chi (two sessions weekly for two and a half months) alleviates pain by 1.3 points on a 10-point scale.

Physical therapy

Describing research from Spine, Mattheis notes that physical therapy can be extremely effective, and that time is of the essence. “Starting physical therapy within two weeks of back pain onset was associated with less risk of need for subsequent medical care as well as lower overall health costs,” she says.
