Anyone that has had a herniated disc knows that it is no walk in the park… Partly because walking can be painful if you’re suffering from this condition. Luckily, there is a non-surgical treatment plan that can allow you to not just walk in the park, but run in it as well.

What is a herniated disc?

When the spongy cushion in between vertebrae becomes traumatized (also known as a slipped disc or bulging disc), it puts pressure on the nerves surrounding the spinal cord. This pressure can cause the disc to rupture, resulting in a herniated (or torn) disc. A herniated disc can cause pain, numbness, and weakness as the surrounding nerves get pinched from the pressure.

Is there a way to treat it?

There is a non-surgical back pain treatment, called spinal rejuvenation, and it shows great results. Not only does it alleviate back pain caused by herniated discs, it also improves posture, and bolsters nervous system functions.

A spinal rejuvenation program consists of three major steps: rehabilitation exercises, spinal decompression, and electrical stimulation.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation exercises and physical therapy are key to strengthening core, and therefore preventing future pain and injuries. The focus is on stabilizing and strengthening exercises.

Spinal Decompression

The next step is spinal decompression. Spinal decompression is accomplished through a table where the entire body is vibrated, relaxing the muscles throughout the body. The device then lightly stretches the spine, creating a negative pressure that acts as a sort of vacuum on the vertebral discs. This results in alleviated pressure on the nerves and actually moves the herniated discs back into place.

Electrical Stimulation

Electrical stimulation, accompanied by cold ice therapy, follows. The electrical stimulation reduces pain, swelling, and inflammation after the decompression table. The stimulation reinforces the body’s attempts to heal itself. During this time, cold ice packs are applied to minimize swelling and inflammation around the joints.
